In the text, “The Southpaw” by Judith Viorst, Richard cares the most about saving the friendship between him and Janet. Richard tries giving Janet a spot on the team. He also accepts Janet on the team and makes up excuses to try to get Janet on the team. One last thing Richard tries to do is that Richard finally says sorry and yes you can be on the team.
Richard is trying to save his friendship with Janet but Janet is standing up for herself. According to the text, Richard sends his final letter to Janet saying at the end “Your friend, Richard”. Even though it’s the final letter in “The Southpaw”, Richard made it official that they were friends again. He asked to be friends kindly and in a friendly matter, “At least could you call your gold fish Richard again?”
After researching and studying this novel, one can take from it that not all friendships are healthy or last long. People are mostly consumed with themselves, as seen throughout the book, selfishness, manipulation and love can all interfere with friendships and cause them to end and not work out. This is not only seen with the dogs, but many people can relate to the friendships that the dogs experience and they can even describe their own friendships in their lives. The end result that can be taken away from this novel is that if someone truly cares for the other person they will apply themselves to that friendship, but they will not become consumed that the friendship will become unhealthy. Not only does Dick manipulate Perry to staying with him but Perry still thinks that the treasure and wonderful life is real. Dick planted those things inside Perry’s head to make them stay together when Perry could leave and not be caught. Dick doesn’t want to get cought alone. Sledge lived and witnessed horrifying experiences at the beach of Pelilieu that were told in his story With the Old Breed. Although, to us, the beach is a calm getaway, Pelilieu is the furthest thing from calm. The story really shows the loss of hope from Sledge and the overall struggle against the Japanese troops. When Sledge first describes the battle, he gives off a hell type vibe filled with fatalities for every second he fought through in the Pacific with the other marines. Bombs were going off everywhere causing bodies to fly everywhere.
Out with the violence, in with the peace! In E.B. Sledge’s book “With the Old Breed” he discusses his war experiences and opinions on the matter. In the introduction of the book, war is described as “brutish, inglorious, and a terrible waster.” I second that.

Without realizing it until he had been humiliated, Pete acted in the same way in hopes of being accepted by Maybelle that Richard did to him. He seemed to believe that in acting out of unquestioning devotion, he would achieve the same from her, and when she rejected him, out of anger and disappointment, he did the same to the reflection of himself. The characterization of Richard and his change in personality, and the irony of Pete’s unhappy ending portray how people are cruel to those who exhibit their own weaknesses. This also supports the theme of “treat people how you wish to be treated” because someone on both the giving and receiving sides of the spectrum of one-sided admiration can end up in the worst predicament once they lose not only their illusion of happiness, but also the respect they had already been
