ElThe Power to Captivate an Audience The power to captivate an audience in a public speech dates back to Roman times. The methods used to convince the audience of their sincerity and portray their emotions have proved to be effective for centuries. The speaker(s) convince their audiences to unite by using motivational techniques. Their goals are to overcome obstacles as a nation and to maintain peace. They desire the support of the people to back up their claims and to carry out their actions. A group of conspirators question the corrupted Caesar’s decision to rule as the monarch of Rome. A naive and gullible nobleman, Brutus, well known as a representative of the Roman people has joined the conspiracy to murder the Caesar. Brutus is clear that Caesar’s death was for the good of the Roman people. After Caesar’s death Brutus presents a speech to the Roman people. Brutus approaches the citizens with a sympathetic and caring tone. Brutus states “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” (Shakespeare 79). Brutus is showing the Roman people that he loved Caesar as a brother, but implies that his love for Rome is greater than his love for Caesar. Brutus speaks above the people, presenting himself as another naive ruler and uses logic to prove his reasoning for killing his dear friend Caesar, but lacks deep emotion. Bush when he gave a motivational speech to the citizens of America after the deadly terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. The goal of his speech was to provide hope and comfort for the country during that tragic time. Thousands of loved ones died and were injured during the attack, leaving behind grieving family members. Bush addresses the facts of the attack but makes it clear that America was not going to back down and will persevere against all odds. He states that our country is strong and these attacks do not define the freedom and integrity that our country lives by. The purpose of this speech was to provide hope for the future of the country and to unite the citizens of America to help out in any way they can.
