The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare was an amazing way of showing different themes such as power, betrayal, heartbreak, passion and love. The play is performed by amazing speakers and orators reading magnificent passages written by one of the greatest writers in history. One of these great speakers that we get to see shine in Act Three is, Mark Antony. Mark Antony was know as one of the best orators in all of Rome, and he thoroughly proves this by using ethos and pathos in the speech he gave at Caesar’s funeral that convince the people of Rome to side with him. With using ethos, an appeal to authority and credibility, Mark Antony appeals to the logic of the Plebeians and use that to turn them against the conspirators. When Brutus speaks first he sways the Plebeians by saying Caesar was ‘ambitious’. Mark Antony then sways the crowd back to Caesar’s side through the use of ethos by saying, “He was my friend, faithful and just to me;/ But Brutus says he was ambitious,/ And Brutus is an honorable man” (3. 2. 85-87). An example of pathos, appeal to emotions, would be “For when the noble Caesar saw him stab,/ Ingratitude, more strong than traitors’ arms,/ Quite vanquished him.
