Gaius Julius Caesar was born into a Patrician family on July 13, 100 B.C. When he was 16 he became the head of his family after his father died during 85 B.C. Other than this, little is known about his childhood. While this was going on his Uncle Gaius Marius was participating in a civil war against his rival Lucius Cornelius Sulla. After the war ended with Sulla being named the victor, Caesar became a target to him. With Caesar’s inheritance seized and his priesthood revoked he began to fear for his life and went into hiding. When he finished his Quaestorship in Spain, Caesar was then elected Curule Aedile in 65 B.C. During this time Caesar gained even more support from the people of Rome, and decided to run for Pontifex Maximus, chief priest of the roman state religion in 63 B.C. This was the same year that Cicero exposed Catiline’s conspiracy, and Caesar was accused by many senators of taking part in the plot. However, the rumors had little effect on Caesar’s political career. Caesar later served as Praetor in 62 B.C and then governed a province in Spain as a Propraetor. Caesar was finally elected Consul in 59 B.C. He formed a triumvirate with Crassus and Pompey, and they then used their combined power to govern the Roman Republic. After his Consulship ended he went on to govern 3 provinces giving him control of 4 legions. Caesar then went on to invade Gaul, conquering many tribes, and then moved his legions to invade Britain. However, this invasion failed twice, and Caesar was forced to return to Gaul. During this time Caesar’s triumvirate fell apart with Crassus dead and Pompey the sole consul of Rome.
