Compare and Contrast of Junior and Gordy
Thesis: Junior and Gordy are friends, they’re the same age and attend the same school, however there are differences between them both, they’re both treated differently at Reardan, have different views on books and are seen differently because of their weirdness.
Both Junior and Gordy are smart and like books, but Gordy sees books differently from Junior. Between these two, they discuss how each of them take books seriously, but Gordy describes each book as a mystery, saying to Junior that “[he] should approach each book… with the real possibility that [he] might get a metaphorical boner at any point.” (Alexie 97). From this statement, Gordy means that one should have joy in one’s reading while taking a book seriously. It becomes clear that Gordy has joy when reading books as he sees each one as a mystery. Both Gordy and Junior are smart and like books, but Junior sees books differently from Gordy. After being taught how to read and understand books by Gordy, Junior begins to think of his older sister who loves romance novels, as she takes them seriously. After receiving an email from Rowdy of his posterior and explaining his relationship with him to Gordy after leaving the reservation to go to Reardan, Junior explains that he’s an apple, “They call me an apple because they think I’m red on the outside and white on the inside.” (Alexie 132) While being called an apple, Junior not only is he weird, but also seen as a traitor as what this quote means is that he is White on the inside and he’s Indian on the outside.
