People bully other people and that person that's getting bullied feel like hurting themselves or killing themselves. They get bullied so bad or dehumanized so much that they run out of options.

However, growing up he wasn’t disadvantaged, he was well-off and able to experience many things, but much unlike the people of his present life, he doesn’t take this wealth or experiences for granted. In the beginning of the novel he recalls something his father had said, “‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had’”(3). To begin with, he had hope that he would be able to finish school. Life wasn't easy for him and he was a person to worry about whether he will be having dinner or not. On top of that he got kicked out of school so it created a bigger problem. Another reason why the “it” that hurts is hope is because his family’s hope is also hurt.

He thought to himself nothing in the world is like it used to be. He ended up leaving Lucynell and having the hitch kicking boy hop out of his car. In the midst of all of this he finds a balance by focusing on what really matters. At the same time this keeps him focused on his main goal which is education. Education will be his family's way out of poverty. Through seeing his younger brother that is unemployed and will be having a child soon he looks beyond this and is genuinely proud of where he comes from. He realizes how strong his family is when he seems them fighting through poverty and making things.
Another example is if he lost he wouldn’t be as good of friends with Denny because their friendship is mostly based on the fact that they hope to move into the same apartment or house together once one of their families earn enough money for a home. Lastly why he never loses hope is because he wouldn’t believe in himself.

In the text they were going through some hardship times “the boys came around to the window, on the side of the house, which was being held open by a long stick” The window being held up by sticks shows that it was broken, and they didn’t have sufficient funds to fix that broken window. “She said that he would be getting in the way if he took his usual place in the front room”, the house they lived in most likely didn’t have sufficient space for everyone to be able to sleep in a bed. That’s why J.D had to sleep in the front room. I have this friend that didn’t have the best growing up because it was so much of them that his mommy had to take care of with it only being her.
