It is interesting that there are many different definitions of the word father, a few examples are: father as in a priest, father as in a man in relation to his natural child or children, or father as in be the fathered of. How one defines father and uses the term has changed and evolved, to the society’s definition that is known today. Fathers play an important role for any living organism that undergoes a form of breeding such as a child, animals, and plants. Without a father figure ones development is greatly limited and can caused a negative impact cognitively and socially for a young offspring. The entire novel itself is a secondary recollection of the main character, Oscar’s, life because sadly Oscar is dead by the time this “biography” is written. Nonetheless, it provides numerous example of a how the lack of a father presence can greatly influence one’s character development as they get older. Oscar, however, did not have the luxury because even before Oscar was three years old, his father left him, his mother, and his sister for an unknown reason this not only affected Oscar, but also his mother, Belí, it caused her to never love again (Díaz 164). Oscar’s father abandonment of his family was a significant impact on everyone, but mostly on Oscar and Belí. Since, Oscar never had a father figure in his life, he latched on to the closest thing to a father he could find which ended up to be Yunior, while he was in college. Yunior was everything Oscar wanted to be, but could never achieved because of appearance since he did not look or act what a “Dominican man” should look or act, whereas, Yunior did. It took Oscar nineteen years to find a father figure and he was exuding with happiness when he not only found one, and was willing to help him “get laid” he was overjoyed. However, disappointment arrived quickly when Yunior decided to stop helping Oscar because Oscar no longer wanted to help himself. It is not enough for a father to be there physically for his child, but it is also important for them to be their emotionally and mentally otherwise it is meaningless. In the first three panels on page 101 of Vietnamerica: A Family’s Journey G.B. Tran’s father, Tri Huu Tran says to him “No son of mine is growing up to be a poor and starving artist…I sacrificed a lot and expect you to accomplish something with your life”. This is ironic in a sense because Huu, is not allowing G.B. to achieve his dream of being an artist because Huu, himself wanted to become an artist as well, but his father Huu Nghiep would not allow him too. Just like in Hunger, Tian and his father had a falling out, just like Tri and Nghiep had and both of them are making the same mistake and their children are paying for it. Tri and Nghiep had a strain relationship because Nghiep was a soldier for Vietnam, later a war hero, against the French and American and a communist. Because of Nghiep being a communist and a soldier during the war, it led to the imprisonment of Tri for months (Tran 83). Unfortunately, at the time Tri was imprison he did not even have a father. Nghiep abandon him and his mother to fight the war. Despite his father not wanting Tri to persue his dream only for Nghiep to abandon him.
