Junot Diaz’s short story, “How to date a Brown girl, Black girl, White girl, or Halfie,” unmasks different views that a one might portray about a certain type of race or skin color. Diaz creates an instruction manual/ book that shows certain and different ways on how to date a girl based on the color of their skin and appearances. The text in the short story shows the reader how to act and behave determined on who they are and making contact with someone of a different ethnicity. Certain people are placing roadblocks on a woman because of her class, race, and religion. In Diaz’s shirt story text there are a ton of issues that play a part, for example Diaz states that the appearance, and class structure are what makes a persons attitude and how he should treat them based off of it. However, the reader can embrace and show a feeling of anguish and disappointment from the writer’s piece. Just by reading the story, the reader can see the Diaz is speaking from past experiences based off of being hurt, “But usually it won’t work this way. Be prepared,” (Diaz 237) “Stroke her hair but she will pull away. I don’t like anybody touching my hair, she will say” (Diaz 237). From the author’s point of view, the reader can feel the rejection and pain to try and understand the thoughts and problems of being Dominican. In other words, Diaz’s voice is heard throughout the short story and one can see that ending it is not an arguable despite but many other situations could arise from it. “Hide the pictures of yourself with an Afro,” (Diaz 235) “Shower, comb, dress. Sit on the couch and watch TV” (Diaz 235). The narrator might show himself as perfect with getting ready but he knows that his actions are hopeless and will be negatively reflected throughout the rest of the short
