Juror ELEVEN is an immigrant from an unsaid country in Europe. He is very humble and polite towards others. When Juror ELEVEN is uncomfortable because of the window, he demonstrates his courtesy by stating “If you gentlemen don’t mind, I’m going to close the window,” and expressing his thanks later (Rose 17). He asks the other jurors opinion instead of only thinking for himself. He is also quite honest and is optimistic about living in the United States. Juror ELEVEN shows his admiration for the United States when he expressed that he “thought that a man was entitled to have unpopular opinions in this country,” which is why he came here (Rose 28). Juror ELEVEN’s opinion on the case changes from guilty to not guilty because he believes the American system is incomparably just and wants to reach a fair verdict because the boy’s life is on the line. ELEVEN illustrates why he changes his verdict when he proclaims “We have a responsibility. This is a remarkable thing about democracy… [we] decide on the guilt or innocence of a man” (Rose 44). ELEVEN believes it is the responsibility of him and his fellow Americans to impartially decide the verdict of the young man. ELEVEN’s manner also changes from very to polite to almost rude when he notices Juror SEVEN might not have the right motives for changing his verdict. When he asks SEVEN “Do you truly feel that there is no room for reasonable doubt?” (Rose 53). He reproachfully asks Juror SEVEN this because he believes the boy deserves an unbiased trial and wants to make sure Juror SEVEN does not change his verdict for frivolous reasons. Juror ELEVEN’s changes shows that he believes everyone is entitled to a fair-minded trial under the American legal system.
