Similarly, in "Free Solo," Alex Honnold chooses to pursue his passion for free soloing, a dangerous sport that is not widely accepted by society. The Highway Beautification Act was created to combat the over-commercialization of highways. These examples illustrate how societal norms can shape individuals' choices and actions, but most people don’t step out of there normal life.
What David Barry is trying to tell his grandson and the rest of the world is to “be yourself” or “don't follow the crowd. Later the author confirms this idea and becomes more specific when he says “just because “many people” believe in something does not make it right”
“The Ballot or the Bullet” Speech by Malcolm X King Solomon Baptist Church, Detroit, Michigan April 12, 1964 Malcolm X speech was not a success because he made the Nation of Islam a regular group, which devoted limitless acts of violence and hate, giving the federal more validation to dissociate and categorize African Americans. His black protectionist outlook called separation instead of unity and equality. “We are nonviolent with people who are nonviolent with us. ‘’ This quote informed that it is considered as a criminal teaches a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks. “A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything.”
Doing Wrong for The Right Reasons There used to be a time where men, women, and people of color were not treated equally. Before a time of equality, women, and people of color, had little to no rights and were restricted within their society. Frederick Douglass and Emmeline Pankhurst knew that their society did not favor people of color or women and, would go on to fight for equal rights for the rest of their lives. Both Pankhurst and Douglas choose to break the law to bring attention to people’s natural rights and defend them.
Most people grow up hearing a saying from loved ones or friends “Do what your little heart desires”. Sometimes this human instinct will push out too far and make our desires the first thing to do on the list, whether it have a good or bad outcome on the people around us . We can see this everyday in life whether it be mentally or physically. A great comparison of that statement is the character Chris McCandlees from the book “Into the Wild”. In the book, Chris removes himself from society and everyone known loved one around him, even though he did not take a second to stop and think how this would affect all of the parts in his life including his family.
Every time we make a decision in life are we influenced by things around us? In Tim O’Brien’s story “On the Rainy River”, challenged Tim’s decision if he should go to war where there is violence or to flee to Canada where there is freedom; although, his final decision was to go to war he was influenced by doing the right thing and the shame or guilt he could have felt when being faced with the dilemma of going to war. When people are put into a situation when they have to choose over two places most will go with what feels right, but others will go with what will be the best for not only themselves but others around them too. A big part of this story and real-life situations is that people want to make others happy and content so they do things
If nobody changed who they were to conform to the masses, individuality wouldn't be met with fear, but understanding. We should always strive to do act in life because it makes us happy, not because it pleases
Choosing to do the right thing over and over again eventually makes it natural for the individual. It is also true that for a particular behavior to be moral, it has to exist in moderation. Consequently, while I may choose not to quit in the middle of a hotly contested race because I have developed the habit of being courageous if I suffer an injury to my head, and the doctors warned me against it, it would be reckless to
Camryn Sharpe Mrs. Wenshau English 11 Block 4 3/10/23 The Consequences of Herd Mentality in The Crucible and in Modern Society The knowledge that one’s actions are their own is something that most desire and feel comforted by. Everyone wants to be able to think for themselves and form opinions based on their personal experiences and values, but that is not always the case. Many who find themselves caught in the snare of groupthink are blissfully unaware of their position. They believe that they are genuinely doing what is right, which can lead to loads of social issues caused by the adherence to ‘bad’ perceived opinions by ‘good’ people.
“‘...remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird’”(103). One sometimes just do things to fit in but there are those who are walking through the crowd. This can be seen in a novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. First idea is being intolerant and tolerant to society classes.
(quote) “It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something!”(FDR). (background)FDR , the 32nd president,, stated this at Oglethorpe university, May 22, 1932. (explanation)
Another case is within “Tartuffe,” when he uses his social power for unrelenting self gain and manipulates situations in order to maintain his “godly” reputation. In order for these mechanisms to occur the characters had to be willing enough to conform to what was needed in order to benefit from their societal standings. Some may conform to gain a glowing reputation, social acceptance from the surrounding audience, or just to obtain some sort of self acceptance. Hence, performing enhances the survival of oneself based on their willingness to conform; therefore, performing helps someone overcome the preconceptions they acquired by making them sacrifice what they believe in and succumb to the pressures of societal norms. In order to keep his leaderly reputation, Frederick Douglass had to repress his emotions and adjust to the exact needs of the people.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” This powerful, inspirational, and strong leader had a vision. He wanted to see change in the world, so he took action and made it happen. All his actions were regarded as disobedient, but he knew that if one does not fight to make a change in this world, change will never be made. If we have learned anything from history, it should be that taking action against unjust affairs leads to breakthroughs in society.
Influences Do it! Do it! Do it! People around us all the time say this directly or indirectly. They are always trying to push us towards something, RIGHT or WRONG.
I think one purpose of the book is to show that it is ok to break the rules sometimes if it’s for a good cause. Roland was basically programmed at birth to find the Dark Tower and not falter at all in his quest. His determination made him cause the emotional pain and deaths of many of his loved ones. Throughout the book it shows his emotional struggle with being “programmed” and how he develops feelings towards others but later has to destroy those people and feelings because he must continue with his quest. If he were different and didn’t follow the rules of his society, he wouldn’t have had to hurt those people.
