Affiliation is something that humans have yearned for centuries. It has succoured humans to survive and flourish, leading to the creation of nations seen today. Good Morning/ Good Afternoon Mr Herb and Class. Belonging is a concept that is not the same for everyone. It varies according to the desires of each individual and has the prowess to make people feel accepted as well as ostracised. This is explored in both Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and Refugee Blues by W.H. Auden. Auden implies that having no sense of attachment to a place can lead to despair. Bradbury portrays this through Montag’s physical action of moving his head “left, right, left right”. The juxtaposition of left and right radiates the distress experienced by Montag and implies that he is in a state of utter melancholy. In addition, the death of Beatty by Montag, “and then he was a shrieking blaze” symbolises the breaking of conformity that has linked Montag to society. This is then softened by the desperate need to find a new identity. When Montag is an outlaw he regrets losing his identity as he says to himself “you’re a damn fool an awful fool”. The repetition of fool validates that a sense of regret can creep into one’s mind after losing identity and can leave the person in a state of unsureness. This emotion is then enshrouded by the necessity of wanting a new identity “He was swept away in the dark”. Montag’s bath in the river is a symbolism for the cleansing of his old identity and the formation of his new identity, which represent his change in attitudes.
