The nature of how Kafka’s father went about correcting his behavior was demeaning and hypocritical. Averill displays at one point in Kafka’s 100 page letter to his father on how his behavior would be just that at times. At the dinner table his father only permitted Kafka to consume food. He was not allowed to do anything other than that, but as he ate he would see his father “clips his nails, sharpen pencils, and clean his ears with a toothpick.” For a child telling them they are not allowed to do something, but then turning around and especially doing it in front of them can be very taxing on them mentally. In the moment, Kafka as a young boy could not say anything to his father on how he felt. He was still a kid and probably didn’t think
