Champions of the Now Many people know of the infamous bodybuilding show created by Joe Weider, Mr. Olympia. Popular movies that followed this event included: Pumping Iron, Overkill, and Generation Iron. Most of the famous bodybuilding stars talk about their diet and training, aspiring to winning the competition, and looking down on their competitors. The focus of the documentary movie Overkill was on the “Monk of Bodybuilding,” or “The Predator,” Kai Greene, who delivers a speech that successfully inspires his audience to change their focus to training the mind, and set their mindset to the present. His passionate voice on the importance of the mental preparation is revealed through his tone, choice of words, and clever use of ethos, and pathos. His demeanor causes the audience to tune into his words as the large man seems to open up, and speak almost directly to the audience with the word, “you.” Such a moment when he seems to be a figure of authority is the quote he makes on accomplishing tasks and success, “It’s not what another man is gonna do, it’s what you’re gonna do… today. A champion becomes a champion not because of anything else other than his decision in the present as he acts in the now, to do what he is supposed to do to see his dream realized. So you’re not a champion by birthright. You’re not a champion by gift. You’re not a champion because someone can grandfather you in, or somebody else pays the price for you. A person becomes a champion because they make the decisions each and every day, throughout the day, necessary to see their best and put their best foot forward.
