Gun Violence in Kansas City
A longing problem in the Kansas City area, as well as around the country, is gun violence. Over the last few years, gun violence has been rapidly increasing around Kansas City and has shown no signs of slowing down. Even though it is likely impossible to stop this problem, the rate needs to be slowed in Kansas City. Gun violence is a problem that has been around for decades and has continued to increase. The United States is one of the few countries that has a problem with school shootings and has one of the highest gun fatality ratings in the world. According to Mayor Quinton Lucas ‘“It is one of the greatest heartbreaks of looking at this cycle of violent crime to see how many people between the ages of 17 to 24 and frankly younger, are in these numbers”’ (Alcock). Teens and young adults die in Kansas City every year, and although every loss is a devastation, teens and young adults should not be involved, let alone die from these violent crimes. Over the past three years, the problem of gun violence has increased, resulting in a record amount of homicides in 2020 in Kansas City. Although in the past two years, the number of homicides wasn’t as many as in 2020, it was much higher than in 2019 and the years prior. The need to slow this problem has never been more of a priority than it needs to be now. One way to help, besides through the KCPD, is by contacting the Aim4Peace program: "Aim4Peace is a public health approach to reduce shootings and homicides and reverse the violence epidemic in Kansas City, MO." (Stopping Violence in KC). The program wants to make neighborhoods safer for everyone to live in. Since the violence problem has continued to increase in the Kansas City area, helping to slow will not occur overnight.
