In his arguments of alienated labor, Marx mentioned the distinctions between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Intrinsic motivations are associated with a people being motivated by internal goods like personal fulfillment, personal satisfaction, and joy. Wealthy elites or the bourgeoisie continued to earn high profits while the poor proletarians continued to take part in labor intensive work in factories. Marx and Smiles both saw this as a major problem in their society. In Marx’s Communist Manifesto, he wrote, “ not only are they [the proletarians] slaves of the bourgeois class, and of the bourgeois state; they are daily and hourly enslaved by the machine, by the overlooker, and above all, by the individual bourgeois manufacturer himself…” What Marx means is that the bourgeoisie is looking down at the proletariats and using them as merely a way to earn profit. In contrast to Marx, Smiles said, “...they [the proletarians] resemble the savage tribes, who know no better, and do no worse.”
The topic of Bacon’s Rebellion has been heavily debated for centuries and is filled with much controversy. Bacon’s Rebellion, 1676-1677, was an uprising of the settlers in the colony of Virginia against the Natives and the governor (Rice 1). The settlers believed that the government was doing too little to protect them from Indian attacks. The leader of the rebels, Nathaniel Bacon, demanded a commission to fight the Natives and clashed with Governor Berkeley on several occasions when he was refused the commission (Stanard 75-80). Eventually, the tension became so intense that Bacon burnt Jamestown, the capital of Virginia (Rice 11).
The American hit television show, The Office, expands upon the background of a group of individuals working for a paper company. It gives details of how their sales work, their work ethic, motivation, as well as their personal lives. For this narrative I want to focus on one of the workers, Jim Halpert, and his unhappiness in this capitalistic position. As the television show continues, we see how Marx's theory of alienation of the worker affects this character in various ways.
According to Marx, there are three aspects of alienation. First, workers are alienated from their products. Their products are made for the profiteering ends of the capitalists and not for their own self-advancement. What does alienation means? Alienation is a condition of workers in a capitalist economy, resulting from a lack of identity with the products of their labor and a sense of being controlled or exploited or simply being estranged of oneself. According to Fall (2007), to be alienated from something is to lack wholehearted identification with it and instead to regard it as strange or alien and perhaps as an obstacle in one 's way or as menacing to oneself. Private property ownership arises and as it arises owners seek workers to grow and earn profit. Because of the high frequency a worker produces, the workers become poorer and owners becomes wealthier.
So far this semester we have read works by several authors that make their cases against the classic liberalism. However, the author who makes the best case is Karl Marx and his ideas about alienation. Marx saw that the biggest problem with classical liberalism was the ability of people to use their freedoms in a way that creates different forms of alienation in ones society. He did not believe that people follow a natural law and the only way to ensure the good of everyone is through a system in which equality is strictly governed. With the freedoms granted by classical liberalism, people are able to advance them selves within society which leads to a separation of classes.

Marx understood capitalism to be a system in which the means of production are privately owned and profit is generated by the sale of the proletariat’s labour. He considered it to be an unfair exploitation of hard work with alienated social interactions and purpose. I agree with Marx that capitalism is indeed unfair and alienating, because it concentrates wealth within a small group of people by exploiting the surplus value of workers’ labour, and creates an alienated workforce. Hence, this essay will first discuss the relevance of Marx’s perception of capitalism as an alienating and unfair system for the contemporary world, before examining the potential of governments to influence the extent of alienation and unfairness that occurs.
Karl Marx and Max Weber both agreed that capitalism generates alienation in modern societies, but the cause for it were both different. For Marx it is due to economic inequality in where the capitalist thinks that the workers worth nothing more than a source of labour, that can be employed and dismissed at will.
