In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Victor’s egotistical actions resulting in Shelley’s use of karma have allowed me to understand the true consequences of acting selfish. He was never faced with anything good in his life because of his desire for fame and power instead of caring about the people who cared for him. This is supported when Victor says, “A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me.” (Shelley 55). This has shown me that ambition with the wrong intentions can become evil when carelessly acting for self-satisfaction. Though it was already too late for Victor, his story has taught me to never end up power driven and to embrace the loved ones around me. The novel demonstrates the aspect of appreciation vs greed and how your karma can be affected by the decisions you make. This book has opened my eyes to making more careful choices that will help me and many others in the long run. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Jane’s unfortunate circumstances led to Bronte’s development of her character, which has inspired me greatly. She was constantly overcoming the obstacles thrown her way and demonstrated massive amounts of strength through it all. This is supported when Jane says, “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” (Bronte 386). Her determination to assert independence and break away from societal expectations is truly admirable to me. It reinforces the idea of self-worth and how important it is to maintain individuality, especially with having to go through the society we live in today.
