Once upon a time there lived the King and Queen of Alternia. On the first day of October, the King calls for all of the men and women of Alternia to meet in the town square to witness the picking of the new island savior. Since the island was created in the late 1800s, no women have been allowed to receive this illustrious position. On the day of the selection, however, a young women by the name of Lucy Winfield applies for the position, and trains every day rigorously to win. After months of hard work and determination, the King declares Lucy as the new protector of Alternia. Lucy and Kate Conolly have experiences that are similar. Like Lucy’s desire to acquire the position as savior, Kate wants to compete in a race for men. Although the islands question Kate and Lucy for their goals, their power and courage allow them to achieve their intentions. Hundreds of people come to the island to witness the event to watch the riders hunt one another while riding on the backs of Capaill Uisce. Every year riders perish and every year more people come from the mainland to watch the water horses compete. Kate Connolly, a teenager that has lived on the island her whole life, decides that this was the year to race, competing with her land horse Dove. One main reason for her decision, is her family having financial problems. Every day Kate trains on the cliffs or watches her competition to see their strengths and weaknesses while riding by the ocean. Along with training, Kate also ensures that Dove has the proper food and equipment needed to be as strong as the water horses she will be competing against. Her training also turns out to be difficult, having men on the island tormenting her or demanding that she drop out of the race. Even with the struggle that came along with the training, she keeps on improving, and soon becomes the winner of the Scorpio
