An Author Before Her Time
In the late 1800s, Kate Chopin was a female author who was a great deal ahead of her time period. Kate Chopin writings did not become famous until years after her death. She is mainly considered a feminist writer who was ahead of her time. At the time of her writing women had no voice and had to submit to their husbands. So, when she wrote about women defying their husband or having affairs it was an outrage. It made her writings unpopular because her ideas or realism was not accepted. Her writings came from the many influences she had, including her family as the biggest influnce. She was born on February 8, 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father, Thomas O’Flaherty, was an Irish immigrant who was a successful merchant. Eliza Faris O’Flaherty, her mother, was the daughter of one of the city’s oldest and most aristocratic Creole family. She had a good education especially, for a woman during this time period. Her family had money (Inge, Bond and Grant). After her father’s death, Kate was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her great grandmother in St. Louis (“Kate Chopin). Which led to her feminist in her writings that was not approved of at the time. She had her education at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Louis, She was exposed to Catholic teachings and the French who stressed upon the intellectual discipline. Kate was interested in writing, reading, and music. She graduated in 1868 then she got married two years later. She would read the classics and contemporary European writers. Her books show that she gave a lot of thought of an independent woman. Oscar Chopin, her husband, died in 1882. She decided to stay in Cloutierville for more than a year to run the family’s plantation. At the age of thirty-four in 1884, she returned with her six children to St. Louis. Not long after her return her mother died, leaving her feeling alone and bereft (Inge, Bond, and Grant). Which helped start off her writing
