A raging storm brews just off the shoreline, ready to make landfall. Hidden by the writing that Kate Chopin wrote in her story called “The Storm”, was some symbolism between two things. The story makes notable mention of the storm, while the characters interact with one another. Consequently, as the storm unleashes its wrath, the emotions between the characters change along with it. The storm has greatly influenced how the story played out, from the first encounter, to the buildup, and where it cooled off. Calixta took note that it has been 2 years since she saw Alcee. This small detail further added evidence of the connection between the storm and Alcee. Chopin was clever though when it came to subtly mentioning how the storm and Alcee are connected. Thereupon getting inside, Alcee said “My! What a rainy day! It’s good two years, sence it rain’ like that” (Chopin 217). This is more evidence to prove that the storm is directly following Alcee. Although it may seem odd, Chopin made it seem like the storm represented the trouble that Alcee brought with him. Additionally, by taking note that the rain has not been this bad in two years, it has been linked that when Alcee shows up, trouble is not far behind. As the storm continued to rage on, Alcee and Calixta moved into Calixta’s bedroom. Calixta was in emotional disarray about the damage the storm could do. Whether that be destroying the house, farm, or even hurting her family. She watched as lightning struck a tree, and the only thing that brought her back to reality was Alcee. In a complete twist, Alcee reminded Calixta of their past filled with love. This resulted in them being intimate with one
