Questions and answers for Desirée’s Baby Do you think Armand’s actions would’ve been accepted by the modern society? No, I do not think so because although men like Armand still exist amongst us, feminists also exist amongst us too. Women that would stand up for their rights and speak up against women just being in marriages to serve their husbands. Also, racism still exists amongst us but it is not as bad now as it were in the past. What happened to Desiree and her baby and why? She committed suicide after killing her baby. She did so because of the shame and pain she felt from not knowing about her origins and believed she was the reason why the baby had African features. She also killed the child to save him from rejection he would have experienced if he were still with Armand. She had no there option because returning back to Madame Valmonde, who was willing to accept both her and her baby, would not have helped her with her feelings towards Armands actions and loss of love. It criticizes today 's society and shows how political and social orders are made at the cost of another. The Ones Who Walked Away From Omelas teaches us about injustice, greed and ethics. It shows that we should not always follow the crowd but instead do what we feel is right. An example could be the ones who walked away in Omelas, “At times one of the adolescents…the ones who walk away from Omelas” (Le Guin 7). They couldn’t handle the unjust affairs of Omelas so they walked away from it instead of remaining in the city while the innocent child continued to suffer in exchange for their happiness.
