In literature, writers use a variety of points of view to convey their plot; these points of view can be first person, second person, or third person. In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the unnamed narrator describes he or she killing an old man. “Harrison Bergeron” is a dystopian story about Americans in the future that have handicaps in order for them to be equal. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” tells the story of a grandmother and her family taking a trip to Florida that went wrong.
"The Storm," a short story by Kate Chopin, is about the affair between a woman named Calixta and a stable boy named Alcee during a violent thunderstorm. Her husband Bobinot and son Bibi, who trek through the storm to get home, are oblivious to these events. In the end, the family is happily at home with Calixta writing to her other husband about how her vacation is going wonderfully. There seems to be a lot at play underneath these events. By using severe weather as natural imagery, the nature of secrets in a cyclical nature, and contrasting gender issues with inner struggle, Kate Chopin's "The Storm" illustrates the longing for freedom in the Antebellum South.
“The Storm” by Kate Chopin is a deeply romantic and sensual short story written ahead of its time that details a passionate flame between two past lovers that rekindles with the passing of a storm. Set in rustic and bucolic Louisiana, Chopin introduces the reader to two past lovers Calixta who is married and with a three-year-old child, and to Alce Laballire, also married and with children. The storm brings them together and seems to be a character by itself, playing a major part in the short story. Just as storm takes the characters in the story by surprise, the impulsive storm of sexual gratification takes her by surprise. Most importantly, the storm is a metaphor and character that functions to help the reader better understand the passion between Calixta and Alce that is as uncontrollable and powerful as the torrents of rain and blinding lightning.
In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," the author makes good use of literary devices such as similes, metaphors, and imagery to convey emotion throughout the short story. She first uses a metaphor to set the tone of Luise's initial shock at the news of her husband's death in the third paragraph by writing, "a storm of grief," to compare the feeling of grief to a storm; this helps the reader get the feeling that the scene is solemn and that Louise probably feels too many emotions that can turmoil like a storm. Chopin also uses similes to portray Louise's happiness and drive for freedom after processing the death in the 16th paragraph by showing the protagonist carry herself "unwittingly like a goddess of Victory," expressing the ironic feeling
Point of View: The novel alternates between two point of views: first person and third person omniscient. Iris Griffen Chase, the narrator, describes the history of the Chase family, her life, and the various events and circumstances that lead to the deaths of her sister, husband, and daughter. In
An Essay on ”The Storm” by Kate Chopin freeflower104 When we read fiction, the atmosphere in this story creates a dominant mood that pervades all parts of a literary work. Usually the atmosphere suggests an aspect of the physical setting where elements in achieving the author’s intention. In some stories, a writer will seem to draw a setting mainly to evoke atmosphere. In this short story, “The Storm” by Kate Chopin, Kate sets the action in an old and stormy house that deals with disloyalty. In this short novel, a storm is a symbol revolving around the conflict.
In the beginning of the story, she heard the news of her husband’s death in train accident from her sister Josephine and her husband’s friend, Richard. She was shocked by the news and showed sad feelings in the story. However, when I was reading through the story, I could infer that Mallard had a terrible marriage life with her husband because the story later said that Mallard was happy because she had freedom. In the beginning of the story, she was shocked and sad but later on, she was happy because of in dependence. These evidences prove that she is a dynamic character.
How would you describe the tone of each story? In the "Story of an Hour" the tone contains melancholy and irony because when the doctor believes she is going to be sad that her husband died and could possibly die from her weak heart she actually dies from shock when her husband walks in the room because she was desperate to start a new life. In the "Revolt of Mother" the tone starts off with awe and accusatory as the family finds out that the father is building a barn. The father exhibits a callous tone as he pertains to the old tradition that men are in charge and women are expected to follow mens orders and keep to house work.
Choose a Point of View Point of view is the narration of the story from the perspective of first, second, or third person. As a writer, you need to determine who is going to tell the story and how much information is available for the narrator to reveal in the short story. The narrator can be directly involved in the action subjectively, or the narrator might only report the action objectively. • First Person.
Allegories are used for many reasons, such as debating about politics, or create moral meanings, but what intrigues me is that authors are able to express their ideas on controversies that have happened in the past with their own stories, simultaneously giving it a better context to the story, and give a peek of how it would feel if the reader was in the situation, just with an allegory. Kate Chopin, most definitely, was a supporter of the feminist movement, and she showed her support of the women’s movement through her allegories, for example, her short story “The Story of an Hour.” "Story of an Hour” starts out with Richard, Brently Mallard’s friend, came home with terrible news that Louise Mallard’s husband, Brently Mallard died in a train accident. On the first page, 3rd paragraph, Chopin says,”She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept. She wept at once with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms.
After comparing “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin with “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck, one can see that the roles for women in society have changed greatly over time. The conflicts in both short stories show the roles women had in society around the time when the stories were written. Which both women are not given any opportunities because of her gender. Also, a person can see the themes in both short stories show how major the rolls have changed for women in society. The themes the authors write show that both women were very underappreciated mainly because women are not look up to in the time when the story was written.
8. Point of View: The point of view of this story is third person limited because the narrator describes everyone except Matt as “he” or “she” but the narrator knows the way Matt feels and thinks throughout the story. 9. Style: (a) I believe that the author’s diction of this book is mostly colloquial because the narrator writes in a language using words and phrases that are appropriate to the specific time, place, and region.
There are many different types of conflict. Conflict typically occurs after the problem in stories and in real life situations. “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is a very complex short story with many conflicts that appeal to all of our different emotions. The main character Mrs.Mallard is going through so many mixed emotions and she really does not know what she wants or how she wants to feel.
We think that the form of the “Imaginary” mentioned in Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory of Mrs. Mallards family and friends “imagining” that the devastated new of Mr. Mallard’s death would cause her a heart attack, however later on in the story it was mentioned that she was in fact relieved to know she was a free woman of her marriage. Consequently, the reality of Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts, perceptions and feelings were not the same as others may have assumed or imagined to be. Based on stereotypical standards of society this was misunderstood because a wife should feel an enormous pain for the death of her husband. As the story continues, when Josephine whose Mrs. Mallard’s sister told her about the death of Mr. Mallard, instead of reacting in shock as “many women would’ve (Chopin, The Story of an Hour)” done so, Mrs. Mallard “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms.
