Even though they both wrote short stories in the same period, Kate Chopin and O. Henry share different views and style in their writing, which can be compared and learned about inversely. Kate Chopin wrote short stories that had been published by popular magazines we know of today, including Vogue, The Century, and The Atlantic Monthly. In her time, she had twenty-six children's stories and a large collection of short stories which had been published by collections including Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897). Her writing style offers a stylistic play with her words—she is precise and straight to the point. Henry both write short stories for famous publications, the work in which they present are much different from one another. O. Henry's short stories follow multiple characters who find creative (a bit ludicrous) ways to resolve problems. One example of his writing style is with his most famous short story, The Gift of the Magi. This story follows a young married couple who are going through a financial crisis, and want to buy each other gifts for Christmas. Because they are shamelessly low on funds, they find a satirical resolution. Della (the wife in the story) decides to cut and sell her hair to buy her husband a watch. Her husband decides to sell the watch instead, unaware of his wife cutting her hair, he buys her a comb. Many of O. Henry are and of how they differ. Kate Chopin often underwent hardships in life and took on the job of raising six children—a hard task to do. Even through these hard times, she found success in writing; perhaps a way to also vent and cope with her feelings. We also know that O. Henry went through hard times, as he too lost someone close to him. These factors contributed to the writers lives and eventually led them to their greatness. Given the fact that both writers were born in the same century, sexism was very high. Kate Chopin brought light to this issue, speaking to the women of the public with her relatable stories and slick style in writing. O. Henry, however, would write through the eyes of many characters who faced ironic and sometimes humorous situations. When comparing both writers, we see the differences that they have and what they present. The century of the 1800’s certainly was a great time for stories and fiction. With no television or video games like we have today, people would often read books to escape the issues of the world. Many should consider reading the works of Kate Chopin even though most works are fiction, because they tell the history of a time we did not get to
