In this case, Katniss played the role of a parent and started providing for her family after she lost her father during a mine explosion. Her family was very poor and could not survive without her hunting animals for food. In her district, hunting was illegal, but she risked her own safety to prevent the starvation of her family. Furthermore, Katniss’ love for her sister, Primrose Everdeen, was amplified when she immediately yelled out this unforgettable line, “No! I volunteer! I volunteer! Both characters live in a post-apocalyptic setting, that has been devastated by war, and where welfare levels vary greatly between the different states. Their societies are not only segregated into different states, but are also run by one controlling power. For instance, Katniss Everdeen lives in a place called Panem. The Hunger Games is set in a post-apocalyptic time. After the war has ended the world, a nation known as Panem was established. Panem, which was formally North America, was forged after the world as we know it has ended. Panem is all that is left of Katniss’ world, as outside their district gates was a world unknown to mere residents such as Katniss. In addition to that, the domain of Panem was distributed into a total 12 states also known as districts. The districts are regulated by the Capitol. The Capitol dictates all operation of the districts, and each district was under obligation for producing, refining, or acquiring goods in a particular industry. Welfare levels varied in the districts, some districts such as districts 1, 2, and 4 were a lot wealthier compared to districts 10, 11, and 12. Katniss’ district was so poor that she had to cast in her name up 20 times in the games for exchange for food to feed her family. Comparatively, Beatrice (Tris) prior grew up in a futuristic post-apocalyptic Chicago. The city that she lives in is surrounded by a large fence and wall, confining all its inhabitants inside the compound. Most of the outside world was abandoned or in ruins. Tris did not know how severe the situation outside those walls were until she asked her fellow dauntless trainee. They simply replied, “Places that never recovered from the war.” So, this proves that both of the characters no longer live in a normal functioning society anymore, as the world has been destroyed by war.
