While reading this, I wondered if Prim was watching the games during this time and noticed that Katniss was thinking of her while Rue was dying. Also this is when Katniss really wanted to stick up to the Capitol and show that she is better than the Capitol’s games.
This change of thought and decision making is only natural due to the nature of the Hunger Games. A large giveaway that Katniss is making decisions that benefit her is the fact that was killing people in the arena. An example of this is when a group of “career” tributes (the tributes that have trained for the Hunger Games since they were young) and Peeta chase Katniss into a tree in an attempt to kill her. They decide rather than follow her up, they would wait it out until she had to come down. Instead of crawling down and accepting her fate Katniss notices a nest full of tracker jackers, which are genetically modified wasps with deadly poison, and decides to cut it down onto the group below her.
On the other hand, Katniss in The Hunger Games is trying to live for a whole different reason. Throughout the novel, Katniss is put into dangerous and unrealistic situations where she is forced to fight for her survival. But throughout it, she adjusts to what’s around her and realizes even more the corruptness of Panem. Katniss is forced to care for her sister and mother after the death of her father, taking on the role of caregiver. She matures, especially when she heroically takes the place of her sister in the Hunger Games and fights back against the other tributes in the Games, often outsmarting them.
That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I” (Collins, 224). This quote shows Katniss’ first outright act of rebellion towards the Capitol in the games. She openly shows the Capitol that the games will not change her or how much she cares for Rue. She wants the people of Panem to see what the Capitol has done to someone so small and youthful.
Moreover, the evidence tells us that Katniss is a selfless person who would basically give up her life for her family, even though she will be forced to go the capital, where she will be used as a pawn in the Hunger Games. Furthermore,
“I volunteer as tribute!” When Katniss realized that it was Prim that was called she immediately said that. Katniss loves Prim so much that she put herself in danger just to save her. At that point in the book, Katniss would rather die than to watch Prim have to go into the Hunger Games. In many of the chapters of The Hunger Games people say, “ May the odds be ever in your favor.”
The overarching theme of Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games, is that love can make people forget their basic survival instincts as shown by Katniss’ willingness to put herself in peril to save her loved ones such as Primrose Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, and the girl from district eleven Rue. Love 's effect on a person 's survival instincts is first demonstrated by Katniss ' love for her younger sister, Primrose (Prim).In The Hunger Games, every year the districts hold a reaping to choose the tributes that go to the games.
