Exposition: The exposition of the book is Katniss’s life in District 12. The book starts off by introducing Katniss as the protagonist and presents the background of Panem, the districts and the Hunger Games. It starts off on reaping day, Katniss hunts with Gale in the morning. In the afternoon Katniss, Prim and Gale go to the center of the district, along with everyone else in the district, and Effie Trinket is going to draw out the names of one boy and one girl, who will compete in the Hunger Games this year. Effie pulls out a slip of paper from the ladies’ bowl and calls out Primrose Everdeen. Katniss volunteers as tribute for Prim, Effie then calls out Peeta Mellark for the male tribute. There they train and prepare for the games and learn survival skills, after weeks of training, they do their interviews with Caesar Flickerman, then they finally get to go to the games. All the tributes step onto their platforms and the countdown starts to go to the arena. Rising Action: The rising action in the book is when the games start. For the first half of the games Katniss survives on her own, trying to stay far away from the other tributes. For the first week or so of the games Katniss spends the days looking for food and water, and sleeps on trees during the night. One night when she is sleeping the Capitol starts a forest fire, and Katniss must run more inland, but she gets a severe burn on her leg.
