Kiana Burns a junior at Chase High School is the founder and editor of The Trojan Torch Newsletter in Forest City, North Carolina and the junior class secretary. Kiana is an active member of her community through her volunteering of Corvettes for Vets, the Senior Citizens Breakfast of Chase High, and the National Beta Club. Kiana’s love for politics was sparked at a young age and with her experience as a Senate Youth she will work toward her goal to become a politician. She hopes that as a Senate Youth she will be able to represent her state and country well in continuing democracy.
In 1911, a tragedy happened in the great state of New York. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire put a huge hole in many citizens hearts as lives were lost and injuries were severe and some untreatable back in the days. With one hundred and six lives that were lost and seventy-one people injured, this event was the most deadliest in the New York city until the terrorist attack ninety years later and still remains one of the deadliest in the United States. It affected America socially, politically and economically by owners being unfair, women not being treated equally and victims not getting the care they needed or deserved.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was a devastating fire that killed 146 girls in New York City (Leap for Life, Leap for Death). At this time, citizens of New York were furious and demanded that the government do something to prevent future tragedies. The government responded and the reforms that the government made, it changed the future of New York industry. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, one of history’s deadliest fires, came as a result of outrageously unsafe working conditions, led to a high death toll and injury total, but, ultimately resulted in reforms that helped safeguard future factory workers.
During the Progressive Era (1890’s - 1920’s) there were political reforms and social activism in the United States of America. These acts of social activism and political reformation were to fix issues in urban areas, fix issues in the garment industry, and to make a changes so tragedies (like the Triangle Fire) don’t happen again. The triangle fire serves as a microcosm for the progressive era because they both needed reformation but action was not taken until things became extreme. The average age consisted of women in their teens and twenties. Most of these factory workers were Russian Jew and Italian immigrants. They worked inside of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory sweatshop for long hours, low pay, and in hazardous conditions.
