Since I was not able to watch a Kaufman student show, I watched the USC student dance company Xpressions. This dance company is a contemporary dance company that is entirely comprised of USC students. The show was choreographed by students as well. The show that I saw was their end of the semester fall showcase. I assume that this was show a culmination of work that the company worked on for the entire semester. This show was comprised of several different dances that were not really connected to tell a story. They were dances that went along to the music that was playing.
The choreography of the show was mostly contemporary since Xpressions is a contemporary dance company. There were some dances that utilized that styles of hip hop and jazz. There was a great deal of elements that were present during dances. One dance would incorporate large group sections as a way to display the high-energy intensity of the music. The critique was of the dancers feet and hands. I noticed that when the dancers would jump in the air or have to fully extend their arms they would often forget about their hands and feet. Their hands and feet would look limp since the dancers did not put energy into them. This could be due to the dancers maybe focusing more on getting the choreography correct than full presentation of the dance performance. Putting energy into one’s hands and feet truly makes a to the audience watching a performance. It shows the audience a more engaged performance. It makes a dancer appear truly focused and skilled. If the dancers in the show were to have fully energized their hands and feet while dancing, the performance would have looked more like a professional dance company rather than a student
