Rhetoric can be found in anything, from the very same music you listen to in your car, to the Super Bowl advertisements you see each year. An example of an advertisement that uses rhetorical devices would be the 1955 advertisement for Camel Cigarettes. It was created during a time where smoking was practically a social norm and before the anti-smoking campaigns you see today were even brought into question. The ad depicts an actor with the classic 1950’s “blue collar” look who has his dog in one hand and a cheesy wide grin accompanied by a Camel cigarette in the other. Camel Cigarettes use rhetorical devices to argue that their cigarette trumps the competition in flavor and pleasure which will result in a better disposition.
Rhetoric is used in many different ways and in many different places. When using rhetoric a certain type of language is being used to persuade the audience to do something or believe in something. Martin Luther King uses many different types of rhetoric in “I have a dream” to persuade people to stand with him in fighting against discrimination of another race. Elie Wiesel uses rhetoric in “Keep Memory Alive” to persuade his audience to not be detached from the world and what is going on in it. King uses many rhetorical devices whereas Wiesel uses very few.
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
In ” Keep Memory Alive” and “The American Idea” both use rhetorical appeals to create the speech. Both speeches were great and both had a great impact on the world. They should be remembered and acknowledged more. In Elie Wiesel’s “Keep Memory Alive” speech he is trying to encourage the audience that they should forever remember what happened to the people in the Holocaust. He was not happy about the fact that the world was silent and that they knew and did nothing about it.

He makes a strong case that these 3 words are an active force that is necessary for our lives due to them helping us avoid future tragedies, rather than just having to deal with so much pain like he did at once and only thinking about that pain forever. Elie Wiesel utilizes these rhetorical strategies throughout the speech to make the audience feel guilty as well as to come to an understanding of the atrocious events that occurred. Elie Wiesel structures the speech to move people and hopefully create peace activists like himself. Elie begins the speech by describing how a young boy who should be ignorant of most evils had come to know pain and anguish for the prematurely.

Whether the author 's purpose is to entertain, inform, or persuade, ultimately these strategies will strengthen not only the author’s purpose, but also the writing itsef. Typically when authors use these strategies, they are very precise to how they use them, and when deeply analysing a piece of writing, this is very clear. Both text use ethos, pathos, and logos, but in different forms, and techniques. Which affects the effectiveness of the tone, and feeling of each text. Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation, uses more ethos, facts and credibility. A Fable for Tomorrow, uses more pathos, appeals to emotion.
Ethos, pathos and logos are the three rhetorical appeals that I use everyday. I used it in many discussions with my mom, arguments with my siblings, or just simply as asking my friend to go out at night. Since the used of it is not mentioned frequently, people often don’t know the meaning of tools and whether they had used it or not. Rhetorical tools are used in an argument, especially when you try to persuade someone with the opposite view or someone who is still shilly-shally about the issue. After the first journal I wrote, I had discover more about how to use those tools and how to evaluate it.

Ethos appeals to credibility, Logos appeals to logic or reason, and Pathos appeals to the audience’s feelings.

Another example of a rhetorical device that I noticed was polysyndeton, which I found quite noticeable throughout the reading because the author used it multiple times. Polysyndeton is when the author uses a repetitive amount of a certain conjunction to emphasize a certain point.
