In response to your request for a speech evaluation, we are submitting our critique of Keith Barry’s Brain Magic speech. We will also highlight how it relates to the practices we should adopt to be an effective participant in the business world.
Brain magic and examples
Brain Magic is a segment of the magical arts dealing with psychological and mind reading effects. Barry highlights that, “unlike traditional magic, brain magic uses the power of words, linguistic deception and non-verbal communication to give the illusion of a sixth sense”. Through providing this definition the audience was provided with an effective introduction that first explains what they are about to witness.
The body of the speech included verbal and extensive non-verbal examples. Its effectiveness was executed through two main demonstrations. First, a verbal example regarding a blind 75 year old Russian woman that was able to read with her fingertips. Her ability allowed her to read printed text, identify colors, and read serial numbers on bills.
Second, a non-verbal example involved him demonstrating how in spite of lack of sight one can still accomplish what we believe to be ‘sight required task’ such as driving a car. Barry accomplished this by using transitions such as “Now we will discuss…” or “To further explain…” He was able to transition from one topic to the next, however he lacked verbal signpost for summarizing or recapping any of his points. Nonetheless, instead of going over what he had already mentioned, he would give examples to prove points. Even though he did not preview his speech, the audience seemed to still understand and remember what was being
