The word “identity” is defined as who the person is, the characteristics that define him, how he thinks about himself and how he is viewed by everyone else. Among the four daughters whose stories constitute the novel, Lena St. Clair is one of the weaker characters. She is fragile, and acts according to what other people think about her. Thus, she lacks the drive to assert herself, failing to take initiatives. The song “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson is about the artiste telling her father the pain of their deteriorating relationship following the divorce of her parents. This can be contrasted with the relationship between Ying-Ying and Lena, which is one aspect of and also what lead to, the many things that shape Lena’s identity, including …show more content…
She said that when she “was so young”, she “heard (her father) cry every night in (his) sleep”. Though the song does not delve much about Kelly’s feelings, I believe that seeing her father in that state and not being able to help him, must have been very heart breaking for her since Kelly sang afterwards “You should have known; better than to lean on me”. This hints that she deems herself incapable of offering sufficient moral support for her father, eventually “(watching) (him) die”. This is very similar in Lena’s case, where Ying-Ying plays the part of the ‘depressed parent’ where she repeatedly shouted accusations at herself for not preventing the death of Lena’s little brother. However, Lena could not bear to let her father know what Ying-Ying said, and translated the accusations differently in English. Following the incident, she watched her mother fell apart “piece by piece” and get distressed when cooking, with her knife “poised in the air over half-chopped vegetables” and becoming “a living ghost”. Kelly and Lena are both placed in difficult positions at a young age. Both of them came from unhappy families and hence, the song matches Lena’s story well because both protagonists share similar …show more content…
When she thought to herself that “(she has) learned the hard way; to never let it get that far”, the audience is able to derive that she presently, has learnt her lesson to be more proactive and less passive. She has perhaps started to take actions to prevent some events from becoming disastrous. This is like Lena learning an important lesson from her neighbours. She had initially thought that the fact that her neighbours fought everyday was rather unfortunate. However, she then “head them laughing and crying, crying and laughing, shouting with love”. From this, she realises the significance of expressing oneself, even when it affects peace and harmony. She applied her lesson learnt by expressing her desire to change the pattern of her life with Harold, telling him that “(she) just (thinks) (they) have to change things”. Even Harold is surprised to hear Lena voicing her thoughts, as he replied her “in what sounds like a hurt voice”, because he had never imagined that Lena could have thoughts like that. Hence, the beginning of the song bears some resemblance to Lena’s thoughts as both Kelly and Lena finally have hope about standing up for their beliefs after the each of them learnt their own lesson. In conclusion, the song “Because of You” is able to convey Lena St. Clair’s identity well as both narrators have similar character traits, predicaments
Identity is what or who a person or thing is. It is what gives someone their own sense of individuality. It is the collective intimate and personal details of one’s life that includes: race, sexuality, beliefs, and qualities. In the story, the narrator recalls memories that he has been through with his family and friend, experiences that they had been through. If the memory is significant enough, it adds to the person’s identity and they learn from it.
At her Japanese school she experienced even more of a disconnect between her two cultural heads, while at the school she was expected to behavior like a proper Japanese girl, she had to sit a certain way, respond in a certain manner, and bow when appropriate. This persona she took on during those few hours everyday clashed with her real personality, “Therefore promptly at five-thirty every day, I shed Nihon Gakko and returned with relief to an environment which was the only one real
This specific piece of Donika Kelly’s work, “The moon rose over the bay. I had a lot of feelings.”, utilizes rhetorical devices such as metaphors, repetition, and simile to develop the story of her struggles through life while connecting them to others. Born in 1983, in Los Angeles, California, Donika Kelly was the first child of her parents. She lived in LA until she was thirteen years of age when she then moved to Arkansas. Here she attended high school along with her general four years of college education at the University of Arkansas.
Some times we just want to start over again and the song perfectly portrays that. Also it saids “… screams but no one hears a thing” Guy Montag was trying to tell his wife about books but as much as he tried she wouldn 't listen to him like the song. In the story theres a lot of conflict that had happen but like the song saids that after a hurricane theres a rainbow. When all the bad stuff that is happening in his life its like the hurricane and the rainbow can be when he found the hobos that weren 't just hobos. Set fire to the rain by Adele expresses the feelings that Guy Montag could have been feeling.
When she was young, she could not process the way her father raised and treated her, so she believed everything he said. When she is able to understand, her tone changes and becomes clinical and critical remembering the way he constantly let her
I chose to do a rhetorical analysis on the music video “You Belong With Me” By Taylor Swift. This song is about Taylor Swift have a crush on this boy who is her best friend when she’s in high school. The boy she likes has this girlfriend who is nasty to him and doesn’t understand him like she does. Given away from the song title, Swift believe that her friend belongs with her. This music video uses both kairos and pathos throughout the music video to convey the song’s message.
The song provokes a positive emotional response, through its lyrics such as “You don’t have to try so hard, You don’t have to give it all away, You don’t have to change a single thing”, Caillat sings on the refrain, in an effort to bestow young girls with a stronger
Lena added that she was a girl and her heels, to help Milkman to understand that she shouldn’t have to be the one, to have helped him go to the bathroom. Lena doesn’t realize that just by saying that she is a “girl” as an excuse, is making herself seem that she is just useless and inferior to everyone. A lot of people just like Lena have done the same as her, that just by their own gender they are and always will be inferior to men, because of this small incident that has happened to her in the past, is the main reason why she loaths
This song shows a young girl who is portrayed as having a dorky nerdy look. Also, it shows a girl that is opposite of her, who is a pretty brunette known by the highschool kids. The “nerdy” girl is in love with a football player, who she believes will never have a chance with, because he is with another girl. “Taylor swift” has a crush on a boy who is blind to see that she really loved her and not the girl he is with who is portrayed as a “popular” Brunette. This is an important aspect to Taylor Swift because she is known to sing love stories that she hears about or experience herself.
Since her husband died she has taken charge. In every decision she makes she shows how much she cares about her family and puts them first. After her husband unexpectedly died the dreams he had for his family were placed into her hands and sprouted from there. Lena is very caring supportive, not only of her kids and
The first reason, is figurative language is a key to comprehending a song. Figurative language interprets the main object to emphasize it´s meaning. For example, in Taylor Swift’s Blank Space she uses a simile by saying , “... I can read you like a magazine…”, she is trying to say that she knows what a male’s intention is. She continues interpreting the main object by using the hyperbole “...we’ll take this way too far it’ll leave you breathless or with a nasty scar…”, meaning their love can end in troublesome terms.
Lena is a caring woman who loves her family. She is understanding of the problems of others, and can look past their mistakes no matter the gravity of what they've done. Even though both of her children are grown adults, she still has the motherly drive to protect them as if they were still young children.
Whitney Houston’s iconic acapella opening to the song is what catches her listener’s attention. This is when Whitney begins to build the dynamic of the song after the first chorus, when the song shifts into a stronger and bolder feel. She then begins displaying her uplifting and powerful vocal abilities. Whitney is known in this song for her capability to hold certain notes throughout her performance. Unlike Dolly, who was calm, Whitney is crying out and declaring her love.
Although she does not want to, their is a part of her that wants to be with him and is jealous that he has found another woman to love. This song is giving the audience a lesson that we are all strong and that it is always possible to be happy even when it does not seem like it. Despite how strong she is, she still hurts and speaks to her ex who left her broken hearted. “I heard that you 're settled down, that you found a girl and you’re married now,” they broke up and Adele is having an onerous time getting over him. While he is married and now moved on to new things in his life, “I heard that your dreams came true.”
The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, tells the story of how the standards of society influence two siblings. Tom and Laura Wingfield are two miserable people who no matter how hard they try, cannot seem to fit in. The play takes place in St. Louis, 1937, in which men and women have specific roles and expectations. Men are expected to have jobs, get married and provide for their family. Women are expected to get married, have babies and stay home to raise their children.
