Kendrick Lamar: Societal Genius Imagine growing up in one of the most violent towns in all of America: Compton. Imagine being exposed to gang violence, drugs, and racism in the form of police brutality daily. Imagine living in a neighborhood where one out of every four people are living in poverty. Now, imagine being one of the most successful figures in hip-hop, yet using this power for a good cause. These two people are actually the same person: Kendrick Lamar. The Compton-born rapper is a very powerful figure who has benefitted society by fighting racism, spreading positivity through his music, and leading the youth out of dangerous lifestyles of drugs and violence. Kendrick Lamar is one of rap’s greatest recording artists today. Even though he had some tough upbringings, he still has managed to put out critically acclaimed musical masterpieces and has helped society greatly. Lamar, whose full name is Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, is another rap great who came out of the infamous California town of Compton. He has reached great commercial success with albums such as To Pimp a Butterfly. He began writing as a young teen and released his first mixtape in 2003. The mixtape interested the head of the newly-founded record label Top Dawg Entertainment, Anthony Tiffith. Tiffith then signed the artist and made Kendrick’s freshman album Section.80 available on iTunes in 2011.
