Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is an american hip hop artist/rapper that has become one of the most successful artists in today’s pop culture, and is loved by both casual and hardcore rap fans. Kendrick is known for his lyrics, as unlike most rap artists today, he likes to talk about his personal problems both in the past and the present. Being african-american born in Compton, California, Kendrick was exposed to gang and gun violence at a young age. Kendrick has opened up in his struggle with gang violence and drugs in both numerous songs and interviews. Kendrick lamar has also opened up in his struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts in his interview with MTV. ( [MTV]. (1st of April, 2015). This stereotype lead to negative beliefs on african-americans, and allowed the racism towards the african-americans to grow. Kendrick’s experience to this public stigma resulted in him to still feel anger and hatred towards the man next door (prejudice). This resulted in Kendrick to release the song “The blacker the berry”, which is an outburst and rage on racism (discrimination\response to prejudice). Effect of stigma over time The effect of this stigma over time has improved in today’s society, but is still present today. The improvement is not due to people accepting that the stereotype is wrong, but rather that the past generations treated african-american’s worse than they do now. Examples of modern racism towards african-americans was shown to tiger woods, who is a african-american golfer. He received racist comments as golf was known to be a “white” people’s game. Suggestion to reduce stigma Some suggestions that i have to help reduce the stigma may include to do a campaign that helps viewers know what they went through. Suggesting making video that has the roles of ‘whites” and “blacks” twisted, showing “whites” as slaves instead of the “blacks”. The video isn’t for a revenge type of purpose, but rather show what the other side of the race looked
