It all started in Compton, the same place where Kendrick witnessed a murder at age 5. He grew up listening to Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Snoop Dogg; little did he know, his idols would soon become his biggest fans. Dr. Dre even dubbed Kendrick as “The King of the West Coast”. That same year, Kendrick released his first official album, Section.80, this album highlighted the struggle for his generation of the 80’s. In 2015 he dropped another album that collected 5 Grammy awards that was called To Pimp a Butterfly. This title was a reference to Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Overall, his album covered on how Kendrick realized his self-worth and how he could grow by himself. Two years later, Kendrick dropped an album no one would ever forget. DAMN. Each song in this 14-track album swarmed the Billboard 200. DAMN. became double-platinum and was crowned Album of the Year at the Grammys. But Kendrick is not just a rapper, he’s an icon, he’s an activist. In early 2018, he created the soundtrack to Marvel’s Black Panther. This movie and soundtrack showed the significance of poverty around the world along with a superhero that African American children can look up to.
