Kevin Wendell Crumb is a very complex character in the psychological horror film, Split written and directed by Manoj Nelliyattu "M. Night" Shyamalan. His behavior is very unpredictable and even perilous at times. On countless occasions Kevin switches from personality to personality and leads various different lives. One of his personalities, Barry, is a fashion designer and artist. Another one of his personalities, Hedwig, is actually a nine-year-old child. While some people that have multiple personalities are able to live a peaceful and fruitful life, Kevin is a very capable man who commits horrible crimes. Some of which include abduction, murder, and cannibalism. He has a host of unusual behaviors one of which includes his compulsive cleanliness. He even sees a therapist, Dr. Fletcher, who confirms that, in fact, “twenty-three identities live in Kevin’s body.” Kevin’s identities have minds of their own and are even capable of sabotaging another identity. A character within the movie even addresses Kevin and asks him for his help which would go against Kevin’s wishes. She refers to him by the identity’s name, “Hedwig, could you help us?” to which he replies, “Okay.” Throughout the duration of the movie, Kevin does not seem to have any close friends or even acquaintances, aside from his doctor. He also resides in a basement that is secluded from other people, proving to have some social issues. Many people who are diagnosed with DID often come from troubled pasts where they were abused and they develop the disorder as a coping mechanism to escape or dissociate from reality. In fact, Kevin did come from an abused childhood and his behaviors are on par with classic descriptions of Dissociative Identity
