A Thousand Splendid Suns
Title: A Thousand Splendid Suns “A thousand splendid suns” is a phrase that comes from a poem written in the seventeenth century by Saib-e-Tabrizi about Afghanistan. Saib-e-Tabrizi speaks of his admiration for the beauty of the country. He says that he loves the country despite the flaws she may have. An important aspect of A Thousand Splendid Suns is its presentation of Afghanistan’s recent history. From the beginning of the novel to the end the country is troubled, but despite this many of the characters have a deep love for their country. Laila returns to her country at the end of the novel because she can’t deny her past or her country. Despite all that Afghanistan and its people have endured and will continue endure, Laila puts her love of her country above her fears. She dreams of restoring Afghanistan to the glory Saib-e-Tabrizi described for her parents, who lost their lives to the violence of the country, and for her brothers, who gave their lives to create a better future for their country.
