1.5 million people in cambodia were killed by a group that was kept secret for two years. The group’s name was The Khmer Rouge, a group who wanted to “purify” Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge was a horrible genocide where Cambodians were being murdered. It is similar to Wiesel’s account of the Jewish Holocaust in Night because the Cambodians were being forced into labor and being killed on an industrial scale. At the same time is different because the Nazis were targeting a specific group and the Khmer Rouge wanted to “purify” people. The Khmer Rouge genocide was committed in Cambodia. For the people who weren’t killed by the Khmer Rouge were forced into labor camps. The Khmer Rouge believed forcing the citizens of Cambodia in labor would “purify” Cambodia, believing Cambodia was corrupt. The Khmer Rouge believed sending back Cambodi back to the Middle Ages. The Khmer Rouge and Nazis motives were different but how they did things were very similar. The Khmer Rouge killed about 1.5 million people while they were in power, the Nazis also killed a lot of people. The Khmer Rouge killed people in labor camps similar to the Nazi camps. The Khmer Rouge gathered citizens of Cambodia and forced them into labor camps and they killed the corrupted. Unlike the Nazis who were targeting Jewish people, the Khmer Rouge was not targeting a specific group, they would just kill anybody. The Khmer Rouge killed citizens of Cambodia so they could control the rest of Cambodia with fear. The Khmer Rouge wanted no other culture in Cambodia. They killed people who knew a foreign language, anyone who practiced any religion. Lawyers, doctors, teachers, engineers, scientists, and any professional field including the army were killed.
