Kick Walter Dean Myers is a well know author for young adults interested in sports, but his book Kick is slightly different than the rest. The whole reason that this book exists is because of a 13 year old who sent an email to his favorite author. Ross, the teen who emailed Myers told him that he was his favorite author because he makes the characters seem so real and genuine. This gave Myers the idea of writing a book with a teen, where they would alternate chapters. Kick is a realistic fiction book that brings readers through the story of how 13 year old soccer player Kevin, who had never done anything wrong ended up in jail. The influence of both his short time in juvie and Sergeant Brown really helped him realize that he had to be careful not to throw away his future. I think that juvie had the lesser impact on him, but seeing some of the people in there who had obviously done some bad things really messed with his head. Another aspect of his juvie experience was having to face him mother and grandma in the questioning room. They both seemed so sad and disappointed, not angry as he had expected. Seeing his mom almost cry because of what he had done really caused him to see that he could do better, even tho he was trying to help a friend. Sergeant Brown had a special influence on him, almost seeming like Kevin saw him as a sort of father figure. One part of the book that made this stand out is when Kevin goes to Brown's house after a fight at soccer. This made me think that even tho the Sergeant made it a point to never be involved with his victims or suspects, he actually cared about Kevin. I think that Kevin is a good influence because despite his questionable temper, he normally shows great sportsmanship, and he is a hard worker. Because of this I think that I could be friends with Kevin, he obviously cares about his friends since he went to juvie for one of
