In life, a true friend is considered to be one of the most important things a person can have. Sometimes friends get in trouble, and when they do it’s your responsibility to help them. The soldier from Panos Ioannides’ story “Gregory” and Ronnie Quiller from Joseph Whitehill’s “The Day of the Last Rock Fight” both have friends that they constantly try to keep out of trouble. When in trouble, a friend will do everything in their power to assist you.
Kyle got into many fights, as a child and as an adult. In his book he says, "While I got into a lot of fights, I didn 't start most of them" (9). He explains how he would defend himself and his brother, but expanded to defending anyone. He claims it was his duty, which shows that Kyle had a true passion for helping people. Chris Kyle 's childhood had a big impact on who he was as an adult.
The novel displays Steve’s father’s perception regarding his son’s presence in jail. Steve Harmon ends up in jail for suspected murder, leaving his innocence to be questioned by those closest to him. Steve’s father finds it difficult to believe that Steve is innocent. Steve’s father experiences “tears in his eyes” and “struggles with his emotions” just after Steve asks if his father believes that Steve is truly innocent (Myers 111).
What is the right thing to do? Ellie Wiesel believes people should do the right thing, but more importantly these should choose a side. Indifference is worse than anger, rage, and hatred as Ellie said, “Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony, have done something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses”(Elie Wiesel, The Perils of Indifference). With indifference people are only punishing the victim and helping to achieve the goal of the unrighteous.
After hearing that his younger brother, Sonny, has been put in jail due to drug use, he remembers his childhood, and how they both never did really get along. Both Sonny and the narrator feel a sense of “darkness outside”, and this “darkness” is what creates the miscommunication between the brothers (Baldwin 338). Sonny changed his normality due to not being noticed during his childhood, and the drastic change causes the older brother to feel uncomfortable seeing his brother, because Sonny told him that “he was dead as far as [he] was concerned” (351). Their struggles caused them to lose contact, and to slowly build that invisible barrier between their
Baldwin uses the plot line to show the effects of how wanting power or control can destroy ones relationship. The narrator in the story reads an article about his brother, Sonny, who has gotten into trouble with drugs. He thinks back to when Sonny and himself were growing up. His mother told him a story about his father and made him promise to never “let [Sonny] fall…no matter how evil you gets with him” (Baldwin 442).
The main idea of “The Charmer” is the changing perspective the protagonist Winifred has on the tragedies befallen on her family. Family conflict is a predominant theme in the story and all members of her family directly face it. The narrator uses her elder brother Zach’s smothered childhood, charming personality and rebellious nature to create internal family conflict. The narrator begins her story as a young girl who, along with her two sisters and mother, unconditionally serves Zach as his obedient slaves.
A conflict is a serious disagreement or argument about something important. Most stories are based around conflict. There are two types of conflict: internal and external. Internal conflict is a character versus him or herself. External conflict is a character versus anything outside him or herself.

A great example of multiple conflicts in a story is in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell man versus man is the most relevant conflict. Man versus nature is the first conflict seen in the story. Man versus himself is a conflict between Rainsford, the story's protagonist, and himself throughout the short story. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, there is man versus man, man versus nature and man versus himself.
Have you ever been involved in a family conflict that was difficult to overcome? In The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini, Amir wishes to gain his father 's attention, recognition, and approval. “It 's important in the beginning of the novel -- as the protagonist feels neglected by his father -- and it becomes important again at the end, in an interesting way” (Singh par. 8). This passage from Dalton Trumbo’s novel Johnny Got His Gun shows a relationship between a father and son through a seemingly small and insignificant series of events. The short story depicts a father and his son on their annual fishing trip. The son decides that he wants to go fishing with his friend instead of his father for a change however, is very hesitant to ask. The author’s use of techniques such as point of view, selection of detail, and syntax in this passage helps to better characterize the relationship between the father and his son in a deeper and more thorough way.
Black and White, a novel written by Paul Volponi, tells the story of two teenagers by the name of Marcus and Eddie. Marcus, who is black, lives on the rough side of town, while Eddie, who is white, lives on the nice side of town. Despite their differences in looks and social class, the two quickly become the best of friends. The two are inseparable, they share love for basketball and are teammates on the high school squad. Their brotherly bond has earned them the nicknames, Black And White.
Conflict happens when a character experiences some type of fight or dispute. Conflict can be internal or external, and generally makes for a more interesting story and a much more enjoyable experience for the reader. In short fiction, the characters experience conflicts that impact plot development. In the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, the story had many conflicts one being when Tessie’s son had gathered rocks and started trying to kill his own mother. “The children had stones already. And someone gave little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles.” (Jackson 7).
It makes the reader want to figure out the way that things are solved. One example of conflict in the story is man versus fate. The man would be Mr. White and fate would be the consequences of the paw. This was a very big conflict because it lasted throughout the whole story. Man versus Machine is another way of conflict in the story.
