The predominant ideas put forth in the piece from the Combahee River Collective were those that addressed the shortcomings of the feminist movement to include all women and to address the full range of issues that oppress individuals and groups of people in our patriarchal society. This greatly furthered my ongoing development and understanding of what intersectionality is, what its goals are, and how it can help everyone instead of the predominately white, cisgendered, heterosexual, upper middle class women that composed and continue to compose a large portion of the feminist movement. One of the biggest shortcomings that are addressed in this piece focused on the racism within the feminist movement and its limited or even minimal efforts
The first African-American congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm, in her speech For The Equal Rights Amendment, emphasizes her point on why women should have equal rights in the workforce. Chisholm’s purpose is to convey the message that discrimination against women is unlawful and unjust. Chisholm adopts a passionate tone in her speech to the American Public. Shirley Chisholm starts her speech by calling out House Joint Resolution 264 which she says, “It provides legal basis for attack on the most subtle, most pervasive, and most institutionalized form of prejudice that exists”.
Today, most would think that all humans have equal rights. Unfortunately, though, women are still not treated as equal as men. Women do not get paid as much as men do, they are expected to stay home and take care of the children, and they do not have as many job opportunities as men do. All of this is in spite of the fact that women have been fighting for their rights in this country since the 1800s. Two of the most widely known speeches are “Ain’t I a Woman” and “Speech at Seneca Falls Convention.”
The generic feminist movement consists of “white, middle-class heterosexual women” (Tong 42). These women focus on their needs, and neglect the specific needs of many women of color, who are often of a lower socioeconomic standing. White feminists focus on liberating the oppressive “housewife role,” (Tong 214) and fail to even attempt to include minority women who may in fact dream of a life in which they were able to stay home with their children. White feminists “fail to realize that it is possible to oppress people by ignoring their differences” (Tong 214). This issue makes it difficult for many non-white women to relate to or desire to be a part of the feminist movement.
During this recent election racial discrimination became an immense problem. Sadly, our nation experienced the heartache of discrimination many times before today. Although Americans treated others with hatred and bigotry, some stood up for equality. Decades and decades ago, one such woman with this bravery was Abigail Adams. “Abigail Adams enforced to stop slavery because she believed that everyone is equal no matter what race, gender or ethnicity you are.
This essay illustrates how biased our country is. Although we have multiple amendments that legally make minorities equivalent to males, females are still treated as if they’re completely irrelevant. Boys look and treat girls of all ages like they are objects or property. Males tend to believe they are stronger and more powerful than the women. Although men do tend to be stronger, women could be just as powerful if they took a stand or a little change was made.
As Ruth Rosen explains throughout her book, The World Split Open, the Women’s Rights Movement certainly resulted in significant changes in the way Americans perceived the woman’s role in a variety of situations. From home to academia to politics, the women’s movement helped to make the changes necessary so that women would be respected and treated as equals in any field they chose to pursue. Of the changes that stemmed from the movement in the 1970s, the unity and collaboration that exists among women is one of the most historically significant because of the way it influenced so many women from vastly different lifestyles. The Chicana feminist is not widely accepted, or even recognized. At its best, Chicana writers and artists take to paper and other mediums to share the message. Writers, such as Andzaldua, comment on the necessity for writing. The Chicana expression of creative thought, otherwise unnoticed by the majority of people, is important in that it allows people to show the struggle, emotion, and wisdom surrounding personal experience (Andzaldua). Poetry, for instance, can be described as a political act, which enables further thought and understanding between people.
“The 2012 Project is a national, non-partisan campaign determined to address this recruit, train and mentor women candidates. Why does it matter if women have a voice in politics? Clearly, because women 's specific rights and interests are not protected otherwise.” This quote provides perfect insight into what women would be more invested in that men would otherwise disregard because they aren’t as involved. The Combahee River Collective Statement addresses and response to the interlocking oppressions that women face. This resonated with me because they emphasized black women’s importance in the struggle against all oppressions. This document was one of the earliest explorations of the intersection of multiple oppressions, including racism and heterosexism. For the first time in history, black women openly and unapologetically communicated their sexual orientations, no longer trading their silence for permission to engage in political struggle. The meetings promoted consciousness-raising but they also allowed the gathering of information and generated needed support for many women who had worked in isolation (Balliet, pg. 160).
Although times and conditions have changed, women in today 's society are still being discriminated against because of the same belief that women are inferior to men. Women in the united states and other first world countries are being deprived of equal pay and equal rights. Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it. This course “values and leadership” introduces the basic principles and concepts about leadership, and provides us with some conceptual knowledge and practical approaches to be an outstanding leaders. I chose to take this course because I am interested in the topic about leadership.
