In “The Jungle”, Upton Sinclair depends upon the use of pathos through imagery to portray the theme of the dehumanizing evils of meat industry. To Appeal to the unaware American consumers about the process of meat process and the harsh way the workers are treated, the author includes in his excerpt, “There would be meat that had tumbled out on the floor, in the dirt and sawdust, where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption germs.” Sinclair doesn’t want people to pass through his message unnoticed, through his carefully picked imagery, he wants them to imagine the life visually to make a change. In the early 1900’s, the conditions in the slaughterhouses were ghastly. First of all, the basic surroundings of the workers were horrid. The floors of the killing floors were layered in blood. It smelled bad and was unsanitary. Also, there were blood-curdling screeches of dying animals constantly ringing throughout Union Stockyards ("Slaughterhouse to the World" 5).

Gary Steiner 's was very unhappy at how animals are treated so his motivation to write this short story about animals and how they are being slaughtered by people daily is the animals themselves. Steiner 's writing is very cohesive and very well crafted as it displays to the readers his true feelings to the people who eat these animals and his true feelings to the animals themselves. I have recently read the short story “Priscilla and the Wimps” by Richard Peck. In response to the prompt, I do not believe that Priscilla’s treatment of Monk was justified. When dealing with conflict, it is crucial not to resort to physical violence, otherwise it may further escalate the conflict. Technically, if you resort to physical violence to try to stop bullying, you are just as bad as the bully. In the story, Monk was picking on Melvin (Peck 2), who was Priscilla’s closest friend (Peck 1), and Priscilla ended up putting him in a hammerlock and then locking him in a locker for a whole week (Peck 3).

Repressed feelings, infidelity and the symbolism of Signal Hill and drowning, help strengthen the theme of a lack of communication between Sandy and Georgie from “Heartburn” and Carl and Anita in “The Lonely Goatherd”. Sandy struggles to express his thoughts and feelings with his wife Georgie. Carl is constantly cheating on Anita and neglecting their marriage. This communication problem causes their relationships to deteriorate, which results in great strife for the ones involved.

I’m defending Mary in the short story, “The Lamb to Slaughter,” written by Roald Dahl. I am pleading for my client, Mary who is not guilty in the murder of Mr. Maloney. Mary would have never murder her husband, because she is six months pregnant. She couldn’t lift the heavy weapon used to kill him while carrying a baby. Mrs. Maloney was at the neighborhood grocery store at the same time the murder happened.
Lamb to the Slaughter is an action packed short story about a wife who is let down by her husband and proceeds to kill him as an act of revenge. Obviously much more happens in this story consisting of humour, action, mystery and irony. Roald Dahl is a master of writing short stories in ways that attract readers, draw them into what is happening through using literary elements and universal themes to make the story relatable to the readers. In this story the main literary elements were foreshadowing, situation and dramatic irony, imagery and symbolism which really drew me in and kept me attached to the story. Literary elements are what make a story powerful and attracts readers to continue reading in the story and in this story they highlight the universal theme of Revenge and Betrayal.

Napoleon creates his own personal guards, who also punish the lower animals who betray Animal Farm. These ‘dogs wearing brass studded collars’ are a force none of the working-class animals wish to cross, for when they do, harsh repercussions follow. The animals that had confessed to their heinous crimes were executed by the dogs who ‘tore their throats out’. By doing so, the animals experience physical fear for the first time since Animal Farm was formed.
