North Dakota is the most rural of all the states, with farms covering more than 90% of the land. It’s known for its rich oil from fosses that were left behind after Lake Agassiz dried up. In the book North Dakota History by Neil Howe, he explains how during the last Ice Age, northern North America was covered by a glacier, which alternately advanced and deteriorated with variations in the climate. Before the Ice Age, North Dakota had a sub-tropical climate much like Florida is today. This continental ice sheet covered much of central North America between 30,000 and 10,000 years ago (Howe 33).

Tourists visiting an orchard and picking their own fruits instead of going to a grocery store is an example of agritourism. Common forms of agritourism in the United States are pumpkin patches, corn mazes, Christmas tree farms, and wineries. Some forms of agritourism also involve tourists lodging at the local farms and ranches that they visit. Most of South Dakota’s residents would identify Mount Rushmore, Wall Drug, Crazy Horse, the Corn Palace, and the Sioux Falls as South Dakota’s tourist locations.
The woodlands by the ranch were peaceful, not alarmed by the breeze of death and sorrow that followed the men as they marched through the canvas of green. I fondly remember diving into history and learning about the historic sites, marveling at the vastness of the Black Hills and Badlands, and gawking in amazement at the beauty and mystery of the caves.

They used the land to the fullest extent without abusing it, and have grown to have a deep connection to the land. Their connection and importance to the land was so profound, they had a number of origin stories.
