In the book King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table, Roger Lancelyn Green makes many connections to the Jesus story. He relates the Arthurian legend to the teachings of the Church by comparing the second coming of Jesus, using prayer, and the Pentecost story where the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Church teaches that Jesus will come again, and in the novel King Arthur and Merlin represent this too. Merlin was put to sleep by Lady Nimue and will wake when Logres is rebuilt and the darkness has fled. “And there he lies until the day of his awakening, when the Circle of Logres shall be formed once more in this island” (75). King Arthur’s knight, Lancelot, prays to God to save him from the temptation of the damsel. “Now Jesu preserve me from your subtle crafts!’ said Sir Lancelot, crossing himself. And when he looked up, Allewes the Sorceress was gone” (136). When we pray to God we put our faith and trust in Him, like how Lancelot trusts God to save him from the sorceress. When Lancelot finds the Holy Grail he cannot see it because of his sins. “He fell on his knees and prayed, saying: “Fair sweet Savior, if ever I did anything that was pleasing in Thy sight, let me see at least something of what I seek!’ Then the door opened slowly and Lancelot saw the Chapel filled with light, the Grail” (324). When Lancelot prayed to God and asked for forgiveness he was able to see the Holy Grail. When we pray and ask for forgiveness we can see God’s calling to us and follow Him. At each gathering of the Knights of the Round Table a new quest is given and the knights leave the court to pursue that quest. “King Arthur!’ he cried, ‘I’ll fetch your cup” (235). Percivale says he will go out to get the cup that was stolen. The Apostles, after they were filled with the Holy Spirit, went out to preach the good news of God. When King Arthur’s knights go on their quest and meet someone new they always say that they are from King Arthur’s Court. “I am a knight of King Arthur’s Court passing this way upon a quest” (101). Jesus’ Apostles tell of how they are sent from God to spread the good news and, King Arthur’s knights say they are sent from King Arthur’s Court.
