Merlin was Arthur’s childhood mentor, and helped him build up his kingdom. Under Melin’s teaching and help, everything went smoothly, until Arthur became the King of England. Arthur and Merlin were destined to meet, despite their seemingly unplanned encounter. According to their first impression, “The magician was staring at him with a kind of unwinking and benevolent curiosity which made him feel that it would not be at all rude to stare back.” (White 29) It was the first time Merlin saw Arthur in the book, but it sounded like Merlin had expected to see Arthur for so long. King Lot disagreed the idea that Arthur became the King of England by only pulling the sword out. Before the war, Arthur and Merlin have different point of views on the meaning of war. “There is no excuse for war, none whatever, and whatever the wrong which your nation might be doing to mine ---short of war--- may nation would be in the wrong if it started a war so as to redressed it.” ( White 233). Merlin thought the main reason for war was to stop or the one who started first. However, Arthur thought sometimes war is right and worth to start if it would bring victory. Merlin highly disagreed and said everything should redressed by reasons, not by force. This time of encounter reflected Arthur a lot and let him reconsider the definition of wars. This lesson affected him the whole entire life even Merlin left. Merlin also inspired Arthur to use Round table to harness the powerful of might to ensure right. Round table is Arthur’s famed table where Arthur and the knights congregate. It symbolizes Arthur’s attempt to balance force with justice that it was a the system of justice and equality and disagree the idea that one person is superior over another. On round table, everyone has equal status that there has twelve seats roundly to prevent hierarchy. One seat was empty to mark the betrayal of Judas. However, Arthur failed of using force to balance justice. In order to strengthen the weakened round table, Arthur decided to send the knights a quest on Holy Grail. “If our Might was given a channel so that it worked for God, instead of for the rights of man, surely that would stop the tor, and be worth doing?” (White 434) Arthur was thinking if the knights found out the True Cross, then they might not need to fight.
