King Arthur’s State of Life

Is King Arthur really dead? In the book King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green leads some readers to believe that King Arthur is not sleeping but that King Arthur dies. King Arthur is sleeping because of the shepherd eye witness, the fact that people have told this story over and over again through time, and that the legend never says the king dies. First off the shepherd saw King Arthur, “All around in a great circle lay warriors sleeping, each of them clad in armour and with sword by his side, and upon a couch in midst lay an ancient king” (p. 329). This eye witness has proven that King Arthur is in that cave. Another example of the shepherd seeing the king is, “And as its deep tones echoed through the cavern the old king on the couch woke out of his sleep and sat slowly up. ‘is it day?’” ( p. 329).
