Legends of King Arthur Research Response: Sir Galahad Sir Galahad was the son of Sir Launcelot and Elaine of Corbenic. According to legends, his upbringing into the world was deceitful due to his mother Elaine. Tales have been told detailing his father; Sir Launcelot’s passion for King Arthur's queen; Queen Guinevere. At the time Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere had been secretly hiding their love for eachother. Elaine; who had fallen in love with Sir Launcelot through the many stories she was told; and her father, King Pelles’, used Sir Launcelot’s secret love as a way to fulfill their own desires.
Elaine was the daughter of King Pelles’, the knight who guarded the Holy Grail, and after Sir Launcelot slayed the dragon, King Pelles’ was destined for his daughter Elaine to marry Sir Launcelot. King Pelles’, who knew of Sir Launcelot’s attraction for Queen Guinevere, developed a scheme that he hoped would fulfill his dream of his daughter marrying Launcelot. One reason Sir Galahad is referred to in such high manor is because he pulled the sword, which previously belonged to Sir Balin, from the stone in the river(ibid). The sword was placed in the stone by Merlin in the anticipation that one day the best knight would free it from the stone. Following his removal of the sword from the stone, Sir Galahad was one of the three knights who were chosen by King Arthur to go and retrieve the Holy Grail, which Arthur had visions of in his dreams(ibid). Galahad also retrieved the sword of david(ibid). Galahad was also able to mend the broken sword and therefore he was allowed to obtain and see the Holy Grail(ibid). Galahad was an exceptional
