Medieval times was the honing base for many different inspirations; whether it maybe art, music, architecture or literature. This English course re-inspired the passion that goes with studying the literature about Arthur and his many adventures. The folklore and literature surrounding the life and death of King Arthur still captivates many in the modern day. Arthurian literature focused on Arthur, Merlin, Gawain, Lancelot and Guinevere’s lives and the intertwinement of their stories. When thinking about all those characters and their beautiful successions and struggles, it plays a tune of chivalry, magic and vast bravery that captivates its readers. In this particular story King Arthur and his knights begin acts of selfishness, abuse and violent. They abused their power to achieve the goals they desired without thinking of repercussion. As written before, Culhwch and Olwen’s marriage was an example of King Arthurs’ abuse to power. Another interesting perspective and story that came with this novel was the love affair between the knight Lancelot and Guinevere, Arthur’s bride. Lancelot was one of the more talented knights who was known to be very attractive. He fell in love with King Arthurs’s bride, Guinevere and they both embarked on a love affair that resulted in heartbreak and disaster. Lancelot and Guinevere were discovered by Arthur, who unleased hell on both of them; he then forgave Lancelot after he decided that the kingdom was more important than his love to Guinevere. The character growth of Lancelot was very heartwarming to me, I believe that he went from a selfish individual to a selfless individual. The character growth of all the characters in these stories prove that some have evolved into better individuals whereas some turned for the worse.
