The Ghost, who was supposedly King Hamlet had a desire for revenge against Claudius, and due to this he heavily influenced the occurrence of the tragedy. “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (1.5.25). By speaking these words to Hamlet the Ghost started Hamlet’s road to vengeance, and in turn heavily influenced the occurrence of the tragedy. The Ghost was the trigger for Hamlet to act. Throughout the play Hamlet, and his actions directly caused multiple tragedies, some of which did not even impact Claudius, the one the Ghost desired vengeance on. The deaths of Ophelia, Polonius, and Hamlet himself are but a handful that were caused. “Do not forget: this visitation Is but to whet thy almost blunted purpose” (3.4.112-113). Throughout Hamlet it was clear to see that Hamlet was a character that had a tendency to procrastinate, and this reminder from the Ghost broke Hamlet’s procrastination. Once again the question can be asked, would Hamlet have acted if the Ghost did not tell him to? Would Hamlet have continued to procrastinate, and not have committed any of the actions that led to the concluding disaster of the play? It was clear to see throughout Hamlet that Hamlet respected, and loved his father very much. This final push, hearing his father tell him that his desire for vengeance was “blunt” was the nail in the coffin. This was the motivation Hamlet needed to make his final move against Claudius, the final move that resulted in travisty. The way in which the Ghost communicated with Hamlet definitely altered the way in which Hamlet acted for the worse. The first contact the Ghost made with Hamlet was during an emotionally volatile time for Hamlet.
