Reputation is defined as someone having a widespread known belief or exhibiting a particular habit or characteristic. Characters come and go, when a character sticks in the mind of the reader it is related to the reputation of the character that the poet has created whether it be good or bad. King Hrothgar, Beowulf, and Wiglaf all possess characteristics of bravery, kindness, and strength that build their reputation in Beowulf and cause them to be admired. The king of a kingdom is looked up to and respected by the people. The duties of the king are solely to direct the work of his kingdom. King Hrothgar was known to be a generous king who rewarded his warriors and people. Heorot Hall was built as a gift for King Hrothgar for conquering many battles. During the big fight with the dragon Wiglaf was the only warrior of Beowulf who stayed and helped. If Wiglaf would have been a coward like the others in his group he would have been less respected. One should consider the fact that Beowulf warriors had not encountered a fight in fifty years. Wiglaf’s ability to successfully help Beowulf fight the dragon with no previous practice showed he had the ability to become a great leader just like King Hrothgar and Beowulf. Wiglaf reputation is unlike the others, it is not completely developed and known throughout the land. However after his brave response during the fight with the Dragon, Wiglaf will have the reputation of being courageous and a leader. King Hrothgar, Beowulf, and Wiglaf have many characteristics in common. Throughout Beowulf readers are introduced to these three characters who all have reputations to uphold, they were all at different points in their lives but deep down they were all striving to please their kingdom, warriors, and
