Former president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, fled from the capital in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday morning. As of right now, he has not been found but General James H. Wilson and Union troops are searching. If Jefferson is found he will be sent to jail and charged with treason. Jefferson Davis was sent a telegram on Sunday morning, April 5, 1865, during church service saying, “ I advise that all preparation be made for leaving Richmond tonight.” from Robert E. Lee warning him that it would not be safe to stay in Richmond, for the Union was coming. Jefferson was sent down to Georgia to escape the attack and stay away from getting caught. Jefferson tried to keep the Union together but when Mississippi seceded, he became a Confederate man. He was elected as a compromise to appease the South. At first he did not want the job instead, he wanted to be a general but eventually agreed. Jefferson concentrated on the military strategy but neglected domestic politics, which hurt him as a president. He could not get European support, could not manage congressional opposition as successfully as Lincoln and he was also a poor judge of people. He did not make use of talented people he did not like. He did not get along with people very well and many people did not like him because of his personality. He was very impatient with people who did not agree with him and he also awarded important positions to people who were not very successful. Jefferson definitely struggled as a president through the secession and civil war battles. Before the war started Jefferson stated this, “ I worked day and night for 12 years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war began.” Jefferson blamed the North for being mad and blind. He graduated at West Point in 1828. At age 18 though, he was placed under house arrest for his role in the 1826 Eggnog Riot which started after cadets were caught smuggling whiskey into their barracks. He later became a plantation owner. Soon after that he became a Democratic Senator for Mississippi and also was a secretary of war. In 1832 Jefferson fought in the Black Hawk war which was a conflict between the United States and Native Americans and was lead by Black Hawk, a Sauk leader. In 1845 he was sent to the U.S. representatives but his term was short because in 1846 he went to fight in the Mexican War. His wife’s name is Varina Banks Howell Davis and he has six children with
