Many people around the world believe that marriages are made in heaven. This is true from certain extent, because two soul mates meet only with the permission of god. On the other hand in William Shakespeare’s “King Lear”, Goneril portraits a different type of marriage in his play and changes meaning of the word “marriage”. In “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo who is living in all male dominant society have different effect on his married life. She always like to humiliate her husband in front of everyone. Even though Goneril’s husband Duke of Albany is with her, but he treats her like evil figure, because she drove her old father out of the house. According to King Lear, “Thou changed and self-cover'd thing, for shame, Be-monster not thy feature. Weren’t my fitness To let these hands obey my blood,” (Shakespeare Act 4.2). Albany is explaining her that being a “monster” is not a characteristic of a woman, and she should not let her blood ruined. Despite being married to Duke of Albany, have extra marital affair with Edmund, which is not appropriate thing to have. Due to this affair with Edmund, Goneril then kills her own sister Regan by poisoning her. Regan is King Lear’s middle daughter and she is also has similar characteristics as Goneril, but she is not that evil. Regan is married to Cornwall, but she have affair with Edmund also. Goneril wanted win Edmund over her sister Regan and she poisons Regan. Both sisters sees Edmund as a very noble person, but Edmund is malice and evil person. The character of Goneril is very miserable, but Goneril kills herself because she somewhat fells guilty of poising her sister. In “Things fall Apart” the author is describing the Ibo culture where polygamy is part of their tradition. In other words, polygamy is that a man can marry as many wives he wants. This novel talks about males being fear, anger, and terror, and women being cultural and traditional as possible. Okonkwo has a high status in his family and village. He strived high status in childhood, which is his personal achievement. His personality describes a characteristics of a tragic flaw, where one who presumably makes a specific mistakes in their actions and this in the long run prompts of his life. Okonkwo, an impeccable heartbreaking character, is driven by his trepidation of unmanliness, which makes him act brutally toward his kindred tribesmen, his family and himself.
